Breadcrumbs (Omni Pro)
This module ships in Omni Pro.
The trail that shows where a page sits, from the front page down to the page the reader is on. It builds itself from the page address, so a new page gets its trail without anyone writing one, and it can stay at the top while the page scrolls so the way back is always one click away.
On this page
The trail is also published as BreadcrumbList structured data, which is what Google reads when it shows a path instead of a bare address under a search result.
Build the trail
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| From the page address | Each part of the URL becomes a step. /services/recruitment becomes Home › Services › Recruitment |
| From the list below | You write every step yourself, with its own link. Use this when the address does not match how the site reads |
| Name of the front page | What the first step is called. «Home» by default |
| Start at the front page | Off drops the first step, for a section that does not lead back to the front page |
| End with this page | The last step is the page itself, without a link. Off ends the trail at the parent |
| Name of this page | Overrides the last step, when the page title is longer than the trail needs |
A step built from the address takes its words from the URL: hyphens become spaces and each word is capitalised.
Stay at the top
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Stay at the top while the page scrolls | The trail sticks under the header |
| Distance below the header | The gap between the header and the trail while it is stuck |
| While it is stuck | Keep the same colours, or Use its own colours — a separate background, text, link and line colour for the stuck state only |
| Stop sticking on screens narrower than | Below this width the trail scrolls away with the page. 768 px by default |
The stuck trail follows the header's own height, including the compact height a sticky header shrinks to, so the two never overlap.
Choose the look
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Styles → Between the steps | Chevron, slash, dot or arrow |
| Styles → Alignment | Left, centre or right |
| Styles → Let it wrap over two lines | On keeps every step readable on a narrow screen; off keeps the trail on one line |
| Styles → Text | Font, colour, link colour and a separate colour for the page the reader is on |
Background, width, spacing, colour mode, animation and Anchor ID work as they do in every module.
Set it up
- Drag Breadcrumbs in above the first section of the page.
- Leave Build the trail on From the page address unless the address does not match the way the site reads.
- Turn on Stay at the top while the page scrolls on long pages.
- Leave Describe the trail to search engines on, so the BreadcrumbList data is published.
Good to know
- The module belongs at the very top of the page, above the hero. A trail halfway down a page reads as navigation the reader has already passed.
- Landing pages do without it. They have one job, and a path back to the rest of the site works against it.
- Describe the trail to search engines can be turned off on a page that already has breadcrumb data from somewhere else, so the page does not publish two.
